if you have ever been to "The Brown Shed", most afternoons, Lee from Cruise Control Surfboards will come in talking about how the old shapes/shapers were back in the 60s, Dave Boyd from Imperial surfboards will also be there swearing, defining and critiquing what ever is in the shaping bay. Ideas, accusations, Dale Velzy quotes, templates and dimesions all get thrown around into a "The Melting Pot". For most people all the ideas, information, experiences get wrapped up and put away in the back of their mind, but for Sean those ideas and informal sessions are professional development that stay at the forefront of his mind. He is the best surfboard glasser in Victoria and is sought after by shapers because they know his work is impeccable.

Sean now starts his shaping career as of now. Zaks Surfshop in Melbourne has been selling VANE surfboards (logs) like hotcakes. the call has been "we need more", "we need more".

Just like Masterchef has done to the way we eat/like/critique and look at food when we go out. This generation inturn, is now smartening up and being more critical about surfboards and realising they only want the finest.

Out of the shaping bay, he keeps to himself. he lives a quiet lifestyle that revolves around spending time with his lady and finding solid waves to trial his board designs. In the shaping bay he is a professional that has stepped out of the shadows of other head shapers in Vicco to stand with the big boys.

if you have ever watched him surf. he follows his own path. he never forces anything and he believes just like a handsaw and its teeth sawing through a piece of wood, its not about forcing the tool to perform its about making the tool perform for you. people will be scrapping out the back for the sets while sean is swinging his board into a noseride on a waist high wave that is breaking better on the inside. He doesnt work harder, he works smarter.

i suggest your next log,HP,Egg,Mid-length,Noserider is from this guy before its too late.

"Mickey Dora was at the theater that night, pouting, it seemed because everybody was paying more attention to the movie than to him. He was wearing a white sheet, like an arab costume, but that wasnt good enough to compete with our first look at twenty five foot Sunset. Just as the movie was ending, we heard a series of loud concussions coming from the restrooms. Dora was throwing cherry bombs in the toilets. They didnt show surf movies at that theater again for a long time".

"After a few years in 1981, Dora was arrested by french authorities in, of all places, Biarritz. I tried several times to have a conversation with him, but it was impossible. Dora talked in riddles, and, for me at least, none of it made any sense.
As apart of our agreement with Nat (Nat Young) and the other contest organizers, we all met the mayor of Biarritz. The meeting was held in the middle of the town at nine o'clock in the morning. Nearly everyone in the town had gathered at the front of a grandstand decorated with flags. There was a big float, and TV stations from all over Europe were there. We all showed up on time - except, of course, Dora. He was an hour late, as if he had a more important engagement that morning. When the time came for the mayor to introduce each of use to the crowd, we stood and waved. When he came to Dora, Mickey was wearing a clear plastic pull-on mask that distorted his features-so he could be there, but at the same time not really be there. After all these years, Dora hadnt changed a bit".

Fresh grew up in the same town i did. although we never became good friends. recently i saw him at a BBQ in Melb. Fresh is an amazing percussionist and artist. Here i display his pencil and can work. Fresh is happy after work to sit in the window sill in his industrial penthouse in the big smoke and watch the sun go down. he doesnt surf but he's one of those guys that would fit right in, if he chose too.

another big decision, but im going to sell this 9'8 custom that got made for me.

**being that i have surfed these types of boards for a few years now, im starting to realise the tweeks i can make to my boards to improve my surfing hence im going to sell these two boards, that have taken me to where i am today with my surfing. The Chaddy Mac Pro Model will live on with another custom i will get made..... so,

the board is 9'8, 23, 3. it would suit someone that wants a versatile traditional looking longboard. this board noserides really well and with speed jams really good turns.

this board has an impeccable glass job (yellow, slight green tinge) and has a really scooped nose concave. its a board for someones that knows what they are doing and wants to surf head high waves or smaller traditionally but with a performance flair. It has a square tail that is flipped to lock in noserides. the tail also has a suttle deck concave which aids in drawing water. with the flip, with a flexier fin the board can really whip in turns.

i had this board made for me for $1600 and im going to sell it for $800.

it has had a few little bingles which all have been professionally fixed by the right people. id still consider this board a 8 out of 10. it was my daily ride that still has plenty of zing left.

big decision, but im going to sell this 10foot custom that got made for me. its named after my late nanna, "Nanna May Pro model".

**being that i have surfed these types of boards for a few years now, im starting to realise the tweeks i can make to my boards to improve my surfing hence im going to sell these two boards, that have taken me to where i am today with my surfing. The Nanna May will live on with another custom i will get made..... so,

the board is 10'0, 23 wide, 3 and a bit thick. it would suit someone 80kg plus that wants a log. a log is a cruiser, something you take out on small days to set lines, nose ride, trim and do the occasional turn.

this board has an impeccable glass job and has a really suttle nose concave. its a really easy board to surf, it has a pintail which makes turning the big board quite easy. the board noserides well.

i had this board made for me for $2000 and im going to sell it for $1000.

it has had a few little bingles which all have been professionally fixed by the right people. id still consider this board a 8.5 out of 10. it was my porsche that only came out on the perfect days. it was been really well looked after.

Shortboarders Vs Longboarders

i can appreciate all forms of wave riding and have time for everyone.....unless they are narrow minded, pig headed, selfish or stubborn.

where i work, many shortboarders work. they know im a longboarder/log rider (i thought i was a surfer like them??). They all say that longboards are useless, and laugh and ridcule me. this is the first time you will here me be arrogant because i actually mean this when i say it - i bet you i can surf better than them all, chuck me on my 9'1 and i bet i could flog them all at wacking lips and whatever high performance moves they tell me they are doin....(not that i care if i am better than anyone but....sometimes walking the walk is the only way bullys can be shut up).

so one of the comments they always make is "see this is what i dont get?, cmac is a longboarder but always has wallpapers and photos on his computer that only shortboarders could surf", "why the hell do you have those pics up? you know you cant surf those waves on those fat boards you ride"??

can i not appreciate good waves you kooks? write any other rebuttles or suggestions for that comment.

i recently went up to noosa again and surfed the points on a good swell. let me tell you about one session. new years eve, tea tree, 2-3ft peelers. i drop the mrs off in the corner who sets up our late afternoon picnic with beverages, brie and the like. i wax my board and say im going out for an hour. she smiles and happily sips champagne whilst i negotiate the rocks prior to jumping in an making the paddle out into the lineup.

id been at the points for about 5days now and sorted out myself and was surfing good.

when i paddled out i noticed Matt Cuddihy surfing and he had his GOPRO pole in his mouth. Matt doesnt know me and i dont know him. i was super excited to see him out there because i know he is a really good log rider. after having surfed for about 40mins he having had a few waves in front of me and me having had a few waves in front of him. i was surprised to think i was holding my own out there. getting some 5s off the bottom turn and wacking some DK turns on exit.

for about 10mins i lost matt though and continued surfing. i caught another epic wave and milked it all the way to the beach. as i was making the paddle back out to the rock again. i saw matt paddling for a chest high wave probably 2/3rd in the set and he was paddling for the point not the shoulder.

in my mind im thinking "hell Yeh" im in the box seat here. and i also thought he doesnt have his go pro pole anymore - he must have dropped it into the beach during that time i lost him.

anyway back to the wave, matt takes off facing the point, swoops his bottom turn and meanwhile the wave i have noticed being the 2/3rd wave in the set has less water in it and has hit the sand perfectly for a chest high barelling screamer, rather then being the set you would hop up on at the point, fluff around for a bit then just have foam and face to play with.

so from matts swooping bottom turn i started hooting, cuddihy makes the critical turn and locks straight into a perched 5, no wobbles, no lack of technique. perfect and perched. the board lights up and shoots a 10-15m section with matt perched on front, me hooting in the background. im 1/2 way up the point paddling now. Cuddihy exits the noseride into a perfect groomed chest high shoulder. upon exit matt takes 2 steps back takes the highline and jams a massive dk carve that flows from the top of the wave down to the bottom. he adjusts turns the board lets the foam correct the board and sets his line for another noseride section. by this time im about 20m away. Matt holds the board back and lets the section build for a split second before taking his first step forward, then a second step, although this time his second step is twisted his hips as he's set up to hang heels, the wave is still chest high and tubing for this section as matt perches for hanging heels. im now about to paddle over the shoulder as matt extends his back leg for a hang heel, leg extension of the board, hand jive noseride thingy (you know the one's - someone has to start naming these things). the wave slaps me in the head as i paddle over the shoulder and matt quick steps backwards while passing me before he resets his stance for the inside section. i look behind me to see if he made his backward steps to reset his footwork, of course he did.

so.... i paddle out shaking my head thinking "farken hell" that was fricken epic. i smirk thinking, here i am chaddy mac from ocean grove, thinking im holding my own out here with cuddihy. as i make the last 3/4 of the paddle to the rock i think, "cuddihy had a go pro pole to deal with, he was shooting different angles while you thought you were holding your own you dick".

needless to say, it was easily the best log riding i had seen in a long time and let me just say there were some others out there that have been on plenty of vids as well that werent as impressive as what i had just witnessed.

big props to cuddihy, he filled my stoke bank and got me all excited.

im begininning to realise that log riding isnt the essence of why i do it, to ride a log. i wont bore you with cliche's but it seems that are are many forms of what we are looking for. solace, existence, purpose, belonging, freedom or an "outlet". log riding is just the vehicle to which these things are reached. so what am i beginning to realise is that people have different vehicles by the means in which they reach these concepts. for us log riding for these guys BMX for others painting e.t.c - i really cant see any major differences between this clip and what i/we do.

for the record. this is how a film should be shot. jeez man, the amount of times ive thought about taking a year off, wacking 10g on my home loan - getting an average setup and filming what we have to offer as aussie loggers, someone needs to produce a quality log film. in essence you want to display those feelings/concepts and emotions to the viewer. log riding being the vehicle as suggested. thats why we do it, for these concepts. some perhaps or lost and do it for the image. ive seen to many log films produced and send a message of an image?? its a hoax. quality editing, music, cinemaphotograhy much like these guys have portrayed is what its about. jason baffa "one california day", brain farm "thats it, thats all". these guys get it right.

Darryn Murphy, Murf, Spud, Murf the Surf.....the list goes on. wether you like it or not, he has the same aurora as ocean groves "chooka" and i dare say when the good lord calls on "chooka" to come to heaven, murf will be the one holding the torch as the unofficial mayor of Ocean Grove. Murf draws people in, hes the pied piper. He owns the surfshop in Ocean Grove and talks the talk. Murf rides an oldmal better than you and on his day he would be one of the best. he doesnt do any tricks. his approach is simple and stylish. murf would prefer to do 2 things right then 4 things awkwardly. He constantly reminds people to slow their surfing down. He has a small collection of fine surfboards and gives more discounts at his shop then he would make money. Murf did it tough through the 80s but remained on a log. when everyone was on shortys and wearing fluoro boardies he was riding old mals. ask murf what would be his perfect wave and im sure it would be a 4ft a frame bomb at "smiths", he would paddle in early, pop to his feet and ease the "klemm bell" old mal into a slight fade before jamming his bottom turn as the wave jacked. he would then take a step forward to a parrallel stance have the hand in the face while the wave is barrelling just behind him. murf would grab the rail and do a parallell stance weave to make another section, after exiting the curl he would then go out to the shoulder for a nice arch turn back into the pocket, then he would kick out hawaiian style. Murf is a goofyfooter and likes scoring good waves and then telling you about them when you missed it. he is a friend, owner, dad, husband and loyal old mal surfer that likes to be humble.

Tip of week: get the crab/prawn quesidilla (insane)

The AGE good/food and wine rated the fresh fish (whiting) tacos the best in vicco. im totally in agreeance.

Service, food and atmosphere were all epic. it seems to be catching on because there were plenty of sinorita's with there lady friends sipping on those frosty, salt tipped margahrita's (an abosolute must if you go there - it can get dangerous past the 2 jug).

The Burrito big news is that they do breakfast burritos as well, word is they make the hungry jacks breakfast burrito look like a pikelet. The owner also told us that coming soon on Sat and Sun - there going to be opening the back up and have a fresh burrito/fajita BBQ going! with buckets of cool mexican ale. Live cooking, fresh food, icy cold mexican beer it cant be beaten.

was that robbie i saw out the back flippin fajitas and dicing salsa??

Cmac has snagged the last spot in the logger pro. Along with his old mal, performance and yellow cman is reppin it for the boys. At this stage it could be a solo trip cause Murf will be eating yellow snow state side. Kitten can't afford it after sinking every cent he had into improving his view. And woma, chef and kitten will be in Noose in may.
We will be running training sessions all summer and helping him get fit for the pro by eating pasta and slamming down cans of icy cold solo.

a VLOG profile. i thought occasionally id choose some locals surfers and write a perspective from "outside the box, looking in". some of this information you may not agree with, it might not even be correct. but its my thoughts and at times my BLOG, so give me that entitlement. nothing will be negative and it may even be flattering. so enjoy the latest VLOG initiative on the profiles of characters our state has to offer. let me start with this one.....

sasha is different to most. i dont really know her to well. what do i know...she surfs good. she gives girls traditional surfing in victoria a heartbeat. she drives a van that is that dirty, i cringe everytime i walk past it. she is good looking.
she works at patagonia and would care for her environment. she is a goofyfooter. she rides whatever she likes. she isnt stuck. she isnt a sheep and she follows her own path. she wears alternative clothes. she would prefer to travel and surf than work. she is aged between 20-30 i reckon. she likes to fade her turns to setup a nose ride straight of the bottom turn.

i recommend the Fajita Burrito, or the CHilli POT and wash it down with a JUG of margahrita.

EPIC, Get there and get some quality grub. Its healthy and you dont leave feeling cheesy!

Bring on the hot summers and burritos! yeh!

AS you can see, when you eat there - it can be quite overwhelming. EASTY on the bandwagon!! yew!!

coming home, CmAc stumbled accross this sand bottom point. no one surfed in the town, obviously. all by himself for 4 hours. he nicknamed this break, "sore legs". cos his legs got sore walking up to the nose and back.

Sean Nettleton has recently started up his own label VANE specializing in logs. The kid has got years of experience in glassing and shaping and worked with the best in VICCO. Some locals will even argue that he is the best glasser in Victoria. Exciting stuff. Sean went with VANE being that The definition of VANE is "finned device". Sean builds the boards from start to finish all by himself (no gimicks, no secret handshakes). He is currently building 4 logs for Zaks Surfshop in Thornbury.
